As you know, many people in the Chilkat Valley have expressed an interest in participating in a committee or community group to give feedback on the timber project. UA Land will engage equally with any locally-formed community group but is not involved in forming them.
Haines Timber Alliance
Sylvia Heinz let us know that there are efforts being made for a “Haines Timber Alliance” to be organized in Haines.
The draft purpose of this group currently reads as follows: “The Haines Timber Alliance strives to grow the timber industry in Haines into a stable part of the economy by 1) increasing efficiency between businesses based on local timber, 2) strategizing to increase infrastructure, and 3) communicating with government agencies, private property owners, and purchasers of large-scale timber sales.”
If you would like to be informed or involved in the organizing efforts, or if you have comments, questions, or concerns, please call or email Sylvia Heinz at 907.314.2038 or firstname.lastname@example.org (mailto:email@example.com) .
Haines Economic Development Corporation (HEDC) is also forming a working community group to address economic opportunities regarding the timber sale. HEDC is holding its first meeting tomorrow afternoon, Friday, October 19th. The public is invited and encouraged to attend. Call Margaret Friedenauer at 907.766.3130 with any questions or view their website (https://www.hainesedc.org/event/timber-sale-committee-meeting/?instance_id=27) .
Coming up next week
While doing field work for the Haines 10-year timber project this fall, the UA Land office has discovered an alarming amount of timber theft along with significant trespassing issues. We will have a report in next week’s email.
